MBB | Voyageurs Begin the Year With Perfect Start in North Bay
The Laurentian Voyageurs Men's Basketball Team took to the floor for the first time this year this past weekend as their preseason tour began with three games in North Bay against the Nipissing Lakers, Algoma Thunderbirds and Sheridan Bruins.
The weekend began on Thursday as the Voyageurs took on the hometown Nipissing Lakers. Although the overall goal of preseason is to gain valuable minutes to prepare for the regular season, a win against a rival is always a great way to create some early preseason confidence.
The game was dominated by the Voyageurs as after jumping out to a 48-34 lead at half, Laurentian pulled away in the second half outscoring the Lakers 27-11 in the third quarter and 22-14 in the fourth leading to a convincing 97-59 victory over the hometown Lakers. The standout performer in the game was Voyageurs veteran Kamil Dia Hantchi who put up a game high 24 points on 9-10 shooting.
The rest of the weekend was more of the same as Friday, saw the Voyageurs down the Algoma Thunderbirds by a score of 84-66 before defeating the Sheridan Bruins 82-60 on Saturday completing a weekend sweep in North Bay. The offensive output was staggering but what may be more impressive is the fact that the Voyageurs defense held each of their opponents to an average of just 61.6 points against per game over the weekend.
Preseason for the Voyageurs continues October 18, 19 and 20 when they travel to Montreal for the Mcgill Basketball Classic Tournament as they will face off against the UPEI, Mcgill and Macalester College.
