MHKY | Vienneau Backstops Voyageurs to Victory

On Friday night, the Voyageurs men's hockey team outscored the University of Ottawa Gee Gees 4-3, earning them their second victory of the season.

The Gee Gees opened the scoring early in the first period, as Connor Sills beat Joel Vienneau at 2:28 of the first period.

The Voyageurs answered quickly as Blake Forslund tied the game at 6:15 on the power play, with assists going to both Nicolas Dionne and Derek Varrin

The Vees peppered Jeremy Brodeur in the first frame, outshooting Ottawa 16-7, but the period ended tied at one.

The Vees had an offensive explosion in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals. Brent Pedersen lead the charge as he beat Brodeur with a slick backhand on a breakaway, giving the Vees a 2-1 advantage.

Xavier Couture added to the lead four minutes later on the power play, on an effort set up by Pedersen for his second point of the evening.

Kaden Ruest increased the Vees lead to 4-1 when he beat Brodeur at 17:11 of the period. Pedersen picked up another assist for a three point period.

The Vees offense was able to thrive in the second frame thanks to Vienneau stopping a wave of 32 shots in the second twenty minutes.

The Gee Gees were desperate to tie things up in the third period and wasted little time in their efforts. Kevin Domingue scored at 1:27 of the third period on the powerplay, cutting the Vees lead to 4-2.

Domingue scored again just three minutes later, as his second goal brought Ottawa back within one goal.

The Voyageurs would fend off any further attempt at tying the game by the Gee Gees and start their road trip off with a victory. Vienneau made a whopping 63 saves as he backed the Vees to victory.

The Voyageurs are back in action tomorrow night as they head to Carleton to take on the Ravens.
