MHKY | Late Major Penalty Sees Voyageurs Fall to Ridgebacks

The Voyageurs played their second game of the weekend against the UOIT Ridgebacks this Saturday January 12th.

The Ridgebacks had previously defeated the Vees 5-2 earlier in the season, making this contest a rather exciting match up for all viewers. The Ridgebacks are currently in fifth place in the standings compared to Laurentian's ninth place.

The first period fell into Voyageurs favor as they were the only team to score in the first frame. Derek Varrin scored his first goal of the season as he charged  the slot and beat Michael Bullion with a toe-drag shot low pad, putting the Vees up by 1-0. Varrin's goal was assisted by Xaiver Couture and Zach Wilkie

After a non eventful second period of tense action both teams picked up the intensity come the third.

The third period held thirty-three minutes in penalties and four goals. The first event was a goal by Jacob Smith. Smith sent a one-timer home from Nicolas Dionne and Marc-Antoine Gagnon and would beat Michael Buillion to put the Vees up by two.

After an unfortunate penalty awarded to Laurentian with just over eight minutes left in the game, the Ridgebacks would have a five minute power play in which they scored three goals. Tyler Mayea would score on a 4 on 4 opportunity and Anthony Latina and Bryce Fiske would score on the power play.

The Ridgebacks would take the match by one goal after the three goal attack from UOIT.

The Voyageurs will have a chance for redemption this January 18th and 19th against McGill and Concordia.
