MLAX | Voyageurs Eliminated by Gryphons in Baggataway Cup Playoffs

The season came to an end for the Voyageurs men's lacrosse team this weekend, as they were upended by the Guelph Gryphons in the first round of the Baggataway Cup playoffs on Saturday afternoon. The fourth seeded Voyageurs travelled to Guelph for a chance to move on to the CUFLA West finals, but were stymied by an offensive explosion from the third seeded Gryphons.

The Gryphons came out of the gate strong as they netted their first of the game less than two minutes into the first quarter. They followed that up four minutes later, holding an eary 2-0 lead. The Voyageurs would respond a minute later as Mike Kussman put one past the Gryphons goalie to cut the lead to one. The Gryphons finished out the quarter with another tally, ending the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.

The second and third quarters were a bit of a different story as the Gryphons tallied five goals in each quarter, while the Voyageurs could only respond with a lone goal from Neil McInroy in the second. The squad headed into the fourth quarter with a lot of work to do, down 13-2.

Offensively, the fourth quarter was fairly quiet until Ian Walters broke the silence with five minutes remaining for his first of the year. The Gryphons responded with a tally of their own, ending the game with a 14-3 victory.

Laurentian University's Department of Athletics is home to 23 varsity sports teams. The Voyageurs decorated history of pride and tradition includes 62 provincial championships as well as 10 national championships in 54 years of competition.
