MLAX | Voyageurs Fall Short Against Golden Hawks

The Voyageurs men's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday afternoon, 13-12.

The Voyageurs opened the scoring just ten seconds into the game when Patrick Fitzhenry netted his 13th of the season. Both offenses would remain fairly quiet after that until Fitzhenry added his second of the game ten minutes later. Laurier responded four minutes later with two of their own before Fitzhenry completed the hat trick with just 8 seconds left in the quarter, putting the Voyageurs up 3-2 heading into the second.

Both teams traded tallies twice in the second, the Voyageurs' courtesy of Mike Kussman and Sam Postma. The team's headed into the half with the Voyageurs up 5-4.

Matt Smith started the third off with his eighth tally of the season, putting the Voyageurs up 6-4 just ten seconds into the quarter. Laurier would take over after that, firing an unanswered five goals past goaltender Jake Kelly, putting them up 9-6. Fitzhenry responded with his fourth of the game, followed by another Golden Hawks goal a minute later. Adam Elinsky rounded out the scoring for the Voyageurs, heading into the quarter down 10-8.

Fourth quarter offense for the Voyageurs came courtesy of Fitzhenry again as he netted another three goals, putting his game total to seven, but that was matched by three from Laurier leaving the Voyageurs still down by two late in the game. Kussman added his second of the game with 40 seconds remaining but that was all the Voyageurs could rally, losing a heartbreaker 13-12.

The Voyageurs are back in action this weekend as they travel to the University of Toronto (Saturday, 7:30pm) and the University of Guelph (Sunday, 1:00pm).
