MLAX | Varsity Blues Edge Out Voyageurs in Home Opener

After a bit of a delay to the start of the game, the Voyageurs and Varsity Blues squared off at LU Stadium in what would prove to be an exciting, down to the wire contest ultimately ending in a 13-12 loss for the Voyageurs.

The Voyageurs started out strong in the first quarter, netting the first four goals of the game courtesy of Sam Postma, Keaton Wilson, Liam O’Donoghue and Mike Kussman. The Varsity Blues would find the net twice in the quarter while Laurentian added one more from Matt Smith to end the quarter up 5-2.

The second quarter was a lopsided affair as Toronto seemed to rebound from the break, dominating the next twenty minutes, finding the back of the net four times, including a late tally to knot the game up at 6-6 heading into the half. Kussman had the lone Voyageur goal in the quarter, his second of the game.

The break proved to be beneficial for the Voyageurs as they came out firing in the third quarter, netting five goals to just one Varsity Blues tally. Postma and Kussman each had two in the quarter, while Adam Elinsky added the fifth, his first of the game.

Again, in what seemed to be a tale of quarters, the fourth was a different story as Varsity Blues third-year attack Jason Barnable took over finding the net three times, including the game winner with just 23 seconds remaining in the game.

The Voyageurs were led by last year’s point leader, Sam Postma (3 goals, 2 assists) and veteran Mike Kussman (4 goals). In the back end, goalie, Jake Kelly, was strong in net, making some key saves to keep Laurentian in the game through 80 minutes.

The Voyageurs will look to rebound from the loss tomorrow as they welcome the always tough Brock Badgers to LU Stadium at 3:00pm.
