MSOC | Voyageurs Fall to Rams

MSOC | Voyageurs Fall to Rams

The Laurentian Voyageurs men’s soccer team opened up the season on Friday afternoon against the reigning OUA East title holders, the Ryerson Rams, and put up a valiant fight before falling 1-0.

The Rams controlled play from the opening whistle, constantly putting pressure on the Voyageurs back line and forcing second year goaltender, Connor Vande Weghe, to make a number of key saves.  The Ram’s finally broke through in the 21st minute off of a free kick as Vande Weghe dove down to his left to make the initial save but his save deflected straight to the feet of Ryerson’s Luka Lee who had nothing but am empty net in front of him, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead.

The remainder of the game was a back and forth battle with the Voyageurs generating a few quality chances but found themselves unable to convert.  At the other end of the field, Vande Weghe continued to be tested but made countless saves, 9 in all, keeping his team in the game right until the final whistle.

The Voyageurs now head to Toronto to face the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday with a 2:15pm kickoff.

Laurentian University's Department of Athletics is home to 23 varsity sports teams. The Voyageurs decorated history of pride and tradition includes 62 provincial championships as well as 10 national championships in 54 years of competition.
