SWIM | Voyageurs Grab 3 Medals, Finish 7th at OUA Championships

The Voyageurs men's and women's swim teams were in London competing at the OUA Swimming Championships over the weekend and came home with a silver medal, a pair of bronze medals, a school record and a combined 7th place finish.

The Championships got off to a fantastic start when the men's 4x50m freestyle relay team, comprised of Matt Schouten, Chris Eastick, Cameron McCabe and Samuel Boily-Dufour, touched the wall in third place in a time of 1:32.65.  On the individual side, the team qualified for five B Final swims and four A final swims but were held off the podium with Schouten's 5th place finish in the 50m backstroke and Konrad's 5th place finish in the 400m IM being the top finishes on the day.  Day 1 also saw Francesca Zammit-Maempel reach the U SPORTS qualifying time to book her ticket to nationals.

Day two of the Championships saw Voyageurs qualify for eight B final swims and two A final swims.  Schouten led the charge for the Voyageurs, touching the wall in 2nd place in the 50m freestyle in a time of 22.54 seconds for his second medal of the meet.

Day three was a mirror image of day two with eight B final swims and a pair of A final swims.  Schouten once again led the way with a 3rd place finish in the 100m freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 49.81 seconds.

Over the course of the Championships, Schouten rewrote the Laurentian record books, setting three different school records (50m backstroke, 50m freestyle & 100m freestyle) while the men's 4x50m freestyle relay performance set a new school mark in that discipline.

The four men and four women who have qualified for nationals will be back in the pool prepping for Toronto in two weeks time while the OUA Championships marks the end of the season for the rest of the swim team.
