WBB | Lamoureux Outstanding in Loss to Gee-Gees
The Laurentian Voyageurs were in tough against the third best team in the country, the Ottawa Gee-Gees, on Friday night. They came out on the losing end by a score of 97-72 to open 2020.
The Gee-Gees had control of the match throughout the entire 40 minutes. The match started on back-and-forth tussle as the lead changed seven times in the first 4:44 minutes. However, the Gee-Gees stepped up their intensity level and went on a 17-6 run to finish the first quarter. The Gee-Gees shot 38.1% from the field and were led by Angela Ribarich with seven points and Katherine Follis with four points. The Voyageurs on the other hand had a higher shooting percentage than their opponents with 41.7% and were outscored by a score of 25-16. The Voyageurs were led by rookie Héléna Lamoureux with six points and veteran guard Kayla Deschatelets with four points.
The second quarter was much more of the same than the first. The Gee-Gees stretched their lead to as many as 15 points, which the Voyageurs were able to reduce to 12 but a dominant shooting quarter of 58.8% was too much for the Voyageurs as the Gee-Gees ended the first half with a fifteen point lead. The scoreline read as 49-34 and the Gee-Gees were led by Brooklynn McAlear-Fanus with 11 points, six of which came from two made three point buckets. The second leading scorer from the Gee-Gees was Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu with seven points. Conversely, Kayla Deschatelets led the team with six points and she was followed by Héléna Lamoureux with five points. The Voyageurs shot a modest 40.0% from the field.
The second half began with Ottawa's continued dominance. The Voyageurs to their credit went toe-to-toe shooting 47.1% but unfortunately, the Gee-Gees were just slightly better than them as they shot 56.5% from the field in the third quarter. Lamoureux was the lone shining star for the Vees in the quarter where she added 13 of her game high 26 points. The Gee-Gees outscored the Voyageurs 32-20 and took a commanding 27 point lead into the fourth and final quarter. Natsuki Szczokin was the leading scorer for the Gee-Gees in the quarter with nine points and she was followed suite by Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu with seven points.
The fourth quarter was the sole winning quarter for the Voyageurs as they outscored the Gee-Gees 18-16 but unfortunately, it was too little too late, the damage had been done. The Voyageurs restricted the Gee-Gees to just 25.0% shooting whereas they themselves shot 46.7%. Kayla Deschatletes led the way with six points and she was followed by rookie Gabby Schaffner with five points in the quarter. In the end, the Voyageurs managed to close the gap to 25 and went on to lose the game 92-27. Héléna Lamoureux had a night to remember as she shot a spectacular 71.4% from the field and led all players with 26 points.
The Voyageurs are right back at it tomorrow at 6 pm when they host the fourth best team in the nation, the Carleton Ravens at Ben Avery Gymnasium.
