WBB - Voyageurs dominate against Ridgebacks for the second time

The women's basketball team hosted the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Saturday night, resulting in their second win of the season. The Voyageurs dominated against the Ridgebacks, winning 81-40 to conclude home opener weekend.

Starting off strong in the first quarter, Laurentian's first points were scored by Claudia Pellerin, only 6 seconds into the game. Emilie Lafond netted 8 points within two minutes, giving the Voyageurs an early 10-0 lead within the first five minutes. An organized and aggressive offence was proven once again by Rileigh Smith and Aneisha Rismond who scored a combination of 4 points, followed by a timeout call by the Ridgebacks. Later on, guard Monica Jean-Baptiste sunk a 3-point shot, while Rismond made her second layup of the game. At the end of the quarter, the Voyageurs were up 25-10.

To start the second quarter, Pellerin repeated the events from last quarter, scoring an early layup and a 3-point shot. Three minutes later, Lafond made another layup and a free throw, Pellerin and Jean-Baptiste made another 3-point shot each, giving the Voyageurs an even bigger lead. With one minute to go before the half, Megan Axiak scored her first 3 pointer of the game, Smith made another layup and Jean-Baptiste netted her third 3 point shot of the game. Going into the half, the Vees were up 48-23.

In the third quarter, the Voyageurs were scoreless for three minutes, until Lafond scored two free throws. The Ridgebacks came out stronger and scored 7 points, in which Laurentian quickly got in formation and scored 6 points, ending the quarter with a score of 59-39.

In the last ten minutes of the game, the Voyageurs' offence lit up, with Rismond, Smith and Axiak scoring a combination of 7 points, while Lafond netted two more free throws, which lead to another timeout call by Ontario Tech. A minute later, Smith, Lafond, Jean-Baptiste and Adams scored another combination of 10 points, leading them to an 81-40 victory for the Voyageurs.

The standout performers were Emilie Lafond with 19 points and 9 rebounds, Molly Adams with 11 points, and Aneisha Rismond with 7 points and 8 rebounds.

The Voyageurs are back in action Friday, as they travel south to take on the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks, followed by the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon.
