WHKY | Waterloo Barely Squeaks by Vees with 2-1 Victory
On Friday afternoon, the Voyageurs women's hockey team lost by just one against the Waterloo Warriors as they fell 2-1.
The first period was scoreless, despite the Voyageurs outshooting Waterloo 10-6 in the first frame.
In the second period, the Voyageurs got into some penalty trouble and the Warriors made them pay. With Waterloo on a 5-on-3 powerplay Amy Barnard managed to dig the puck out of a mess of skates on the edge of the crease and chip the puck up and over a sprawled out Karen Collins to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead at 9:54. Then, just as the Voyageurs got back to even strength, Carolyn Burke redirected a shot from Brooklyn Sarnovsky at 11:24 of the second, giving Waterloo a 2-0 lead.
Feeling desperate, the Voyageurs turned it up a notch in the third period trying to tie the game. Morgan McCann finally broke the scoreless bout for the Voyageurs on a solo effort, as she blew by the entire Warrior team and, streaming down the right side, beat Taylor Reimer on the blocker side, cutting the Warrior lead in half.
Despite outshooting the Warriors 7-3 in the final period and creating a flurry of action in the final four minutes, the Voyageurs were unable to find the tying goal and would be defeated 2-1.
Despite the loss, every game is still just as important as the season winds down and the hunt for the playoffs heats up and the Voyageurs are back at it tomorrow against Laurier at 3:50 PM.
