WHKY | Habal Scores Shootout Winner, Voyageurs Move Into 5th
On Friday night, the Laurentian women's hockey team won a 3-2 nail-biter in a shootout against Ryerson, moving them into sixth place in the standings as the regular season dwindles down.
Morgan McCann continued her team-leading scoring ways by scoring just 55 seconds into the first period on a partial breakaway. McCann's goal was assisted by Nicole Vigilanti and was the only goal of the period.
The second period was scoreless, as Karen Collins made all 13 saves she faced, giving her 25 saves through 40 minutes.
Ryerson came out in the third period with a much more inspired effort, scoring their first goal of the game and tying the contest at 3:31 on the powerplay. Sarah McGilvray beat Karen Collins on a play assisted by Stephanie Chiste. Just over three minutes later, Ryerson struck again on the special teams, this time shorthanded. Michelle Evangelou gave Ryerson their first lead of the game, forcing the Vees into desparation mode. The Voyageurs tied the game up six minutes later as Marie-Pierre Pelissou scored at 12:21 on a goal assisted by Sam Morell. The tying marker would be the last goal of regulation time as both teams prepared for overtime.
Despite five minute periods of 4-on-4 overtime and four minutes of 3-on-3 overtime, neither team was able to score the golden goal and the game would then be decided by a shootout. The first two shooters for both teams scored while both third shooters were stopped, sending the shootout into sudden death rounds. It was in this round that Sara Habal strapped on her cape, and, having not scored a goal all year, scored the game winner in the fourth round of the shootout.
With the win, the Voyageurs are now in fifth place and travel to U of T tomorrow to try and continue to move up the standings as the regular season comes to a close.
