WHKY | Voyageurs Double Up #7 Mustangs
On Sunday afternoon, the Laurentian Voyageurs beat the #7 Western Mustangs 4-2 to win their second game in as many nights and move into a tie for third place in league standings.
The Voyageurs looked a little sluggish to begin the game, having played less than 24 hours earlier. The Mustangs got out to an early lead when Alyssa Chiarello scored at 9:54 of the period on a 5-on-3 powerplay. Chiarello’s goal was the only goal of the period and the Voyageurs head into the first intermission down by one.
The same Voyageurs team that dominated the day before hit the ice for the second period. Morgan McCann scored just over three mnutes into the first period, with assists going to Annie Sheridan and Taylor Weber. Despite this being the only goal of the period, the Voyageurs completely dominated the Mustangs, outshooting them 15-7.
Ellery Veerman, who was on a mission to fill the net this weekend, scored just over three minutes into the third to give the Vees their first lead of the game. Just under two minutes later, Taylor Weber increased the Voyageurs lead on the powerplay after a great pass by Annie Sheridan. Sara Habal picked up the remaning assist on the play. Western applied the pressure after finding themselves in a two goal deficit and got within one at Megan Taylor was the recipient of a fortunate bounce and was able to beat Laura Deller. That would be as close as the Mustangs would get, however, and Emma Leger would seal the deal with less than a minute to play after a great individual effort that saw her slide int he pick into the empty net.
With two wins this weekend and six points, the Voyageurs now slide into a tie for third place in the standings. The Voyageurs hit the road next weekend looking to build off an incredibly successful weekend.
