WHKY | Gaels Score 3 Goals in Just Over 2 Minutes to Steal Win

On Saturday night, the Voyageurs women's hockey team dropped a close contest to the Queen's Gaels 4-3 in overtime.

The Vees jumped out to the game's first lead when Sam Morell scored at 16:51 of the first period, giving the Voyageurs a 1-0 edge. Morell's goal was the only goal of the period, despite the Voyageurs outshooting Queen's 13-9.

The Vees continued to hound the Gaels and their pressure eventually paid off. Annie Sheridan scored at 11:01 on the powerplay, giving the Voyageurs a 2-0 lead. Madison Heeney and Sam Morell assisted on the play.

The Gaels answered back quickly, however, as Addi Halladay scored just over a minute later, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The action really heated up in the third period. Morell, with the hot stick on the night, scored her second goal of the evening at 12:09 on an unassisted effort, restoring the Voyageurs two goal lead.

The Gaels were not giving up though, and after outshooting the Vees 14-5 in the third period, their efforts paid off late.

Jessica Wakefield scored at 18:18 on the power play to bring the score to 3-2.

Then, in the dying seconds, Queen's desperation effort cashed in as Halladay scored her second goal of the contest, tying the game at 19:13 of the final period.

The Gaels, riding their late period momentum, wasted little time potting the winner in the first overtime period. Wakefield scored her second goal of the game just 25 seconds into overtime, managing to get one by Karen Collins, who made 37 saves on the night.

Despite the loss, the Voyageurs still managed a point and are now sitting tied for the eigth and final playoff spot. The Voyageurs travel to Guelph and Brock next weekend as they continue to battle into the depths of the regular season.
