WHKY | Voyageurs and Rams Go The Distance
On Sunday afternoon, the Voyageurs women's hockey team lost 2-1 in a shootout to the Ryerson Rams, giving the Vees a 1-1 record on the weekend.
The Voyageurs jumped out to the game's first lead when Nicole Vigilanti beat Rachel Seeley with a shot after receiving a pass from Natalie Lamarche at 8:14. Karen Collins stopped all nine Ryerson shots she faced in the period.
The second period was a scoreless battle despite both teams having a powerplay opportunity each. Collins again stood tall in net, this time stopping 14 shots in the period for a total of 23 shots in 40 minutes.
The took the play to the Vees in the third period in an effort to even the score. Coming off the tail end of a power play, Sarah McGilvray found a way to beat Collins and tie the contest at the 8:33 mark as she bounced a pass attempt off of the skate of Brooklyn Davis past Collins.
The game would need extra time where again, however, neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Voyageurs carried the majority of the play in the overtime period, outshooting the Rams 5-1, but to no avail.
A shootout was required to find a winner and Brooklyn Gemmill was the only shooter on either side to score, securing the victory for the Rams. Morgan McCann, Davis, Sara Habal and Madison Heeney all had shot attempts for the Voyageurs.
After a three-point weekend, the Voyageurs now sit three points out of the eighth and final playoff spot with three games left before the Christmas break. The Vees travel to York next weekend to take on the Lions.
