WHKY | Voyageurs Fall to Warriors in Shootout

On Thursday night, the Voyageurs women's grabbed a single point as the Vees fell 3-2 in a shootout loss to the Waterloo Warriors.

The Voyageurs opened the scoring at 12:41 as Sam Morell continued to lead the team in scoring as she connected on the power play with Elissa Bertuzzi and Julia Giannitsopoulos, giving the Vees 1-0 lead. Morell's goal was the only tally of the period as the Voyageurs outshot the Warriors 12-9.

The Voyageurs surrendered a pair of goals in the second period, relinquishing their lead.  Maryn Caragata struck first on the powerplay for the Warriors at 10:07.  Caragata's goal was followed up by Brookslyn Sarnovsky who beat Karen Collins at 17:16 of the second, giving Waterloo their first lead of the game.

The Voyageurs wasted little time in the third period tying the contest as veteran forward Jessica Staats scored just 19 seconds into the period with an assist going to Voyageur captain Ellery Veerman and Morgan McCann.

The game remained tied throughout the remainder of the third period and through the overtime period and the 2-2 tie required a shootout to determine a winner.

The Voyageurs were outscored 2-1 in the shootout. Regan Toltesi and Staats had the two unsuccessful attempts for the Vees while Morell netted the only Voyageurs shootout attempt. Caragata and Sarah Rettinger scored the first two shots for the Warriors, defeating the Voyageurs with a final score of 3-2.

Despite the loss, the Vees carry on to the University of Windsor on Friday night where they will try to avenge Thursday's defeat against the Lancers.
