WHKY | Badgers Sneak Past Voyageurs

WHKY | Badgers Sneak Past Voyageurs

On Sunday afternoon, the Voyageurs women's hockey team were beaten by the visiting Brock Badgers 5-2 as the playoff race tightens up.

Brock opened the scoring just over two minutes into the first period as Christina Ieradi beat Shanna Dolighan at 2:10 to take the early lead.  The Vees responded shortly after as Nicole Vigilanti found the back of the net on a play set up by Samantha Morell and Abbey Caldwell.  The Badgers would regain their one goal advantage before the period ended, however, as Marissa Graham put Brock back on top 2-1 at 13:01. The first period came to a close with the Voyageurs being outshot 9-8.

The second peroid was a tightly contested period as neither team was able to score, despite the Vees outshooting Brock 12-4 and controling the majority of the play.

Things got interesting in the third period.

Annie Berg scored at 12:23 to give Brock a two goal lead. Morgan McCann responded on the powerplay for the Voyageurs shortly after at 14:40 as Annie Sheridan picked up the lone assist.  With time ticking down and the Vees desperate to tie the game, Dolighan was pulled with just under four minutes left. Unable to score, the Voyageurs surrenderd two empty net goals and the Badgers would walk away with a 5-2 win.

With the loss, the Voyageurs sit one point out of the final playoff spot with two games remaining in the regular season next weekend against Waterloo and Laurier. The Warriors currently hold down the eighth and final playoff spot making Saturday's game a pivotal one.
