WHKY | Voyageurs Fall to Queen's in Season Opener

WHKY | Voyageurs Fall to Queen's in Season Opener

The Laurentian Women's hockey team had a their first set of regular season games this weekend playing both Queen's and UOIT.

Their first game was against a highly skilled Queen's Gales women's hockey team on October 12th.

The Gaels women's team last year in the 2017-2018 season had great playoff success and made it to the U SPORTS Championships. The Gaels finished the year with a 21-7-4 record.

The Vees knew they had their work cut out for them and didn't fear away from the challenge.

The first period had a lot of action biased towards the Gaels' side as they were able to score three goals throughout the period and one of them being a power play goal.

The second period started with another fierce Gaels attack led by Hailey Wilson who had her second point of the night and it was assisted by Brooklyn Bastarche being as well her second point of the night.

Nearing the end of the second period the Vees showed signs of life as they potted the first away goal of the night breaking Mackenzy Arsenault's shutout. The goal was scored by Abbey Caldwell and assisted by Carley Olivier with just three minutes and thirty seconds left in the second period.

The final period showed two power play opportunities for the Vees but they were only able to capitalize on one of those. Julia Giannitsopoulos was the Voyageur who led that charge as she required no assistance to pot her very first OUA goal and making the game a 4-2 score.

A valiant effort led by the Voyaguers but they were unable to come out victorious against a strong and experienced offensive Gaels squad. They look to come back and end the weekend with a win against the UOIT Ridgebacks this coming Saturday, October 13th.
