WHKY | Voyageurs Prevail in Shootout

WHKY | Voyageurs Prevail in Shootout
The Laurentian Voyageurs women's team played a Sunday afternoon game that was held against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The game was a low scoring contest that had both the Vees and the Blues putting their best efforts forward as both teams are looking to add to the win column in the early season.

As the Vees lost their previous game against Ryerson in overtime this weekend they were clearly working towards ending this weekend with a win.

With that mentality, the Voyageurs' Julia Giannitsopoulos, a second year defenceman, scored her third goal of the season to put the Vees up by one in the first period.

As both the second period and third period had nothing but penalties and stellar goal keeping from Karen Collins and Madeline Albert, the Blues were able to score in the dying seconds with just 27 seconds left on the clock and sending the game to overtime.

The tie sent both teams to extra frames, in this sudden death overtime a Blues poweplay was shutdown by an experienced and skilled Voyageurs penalty kill.

Overtime did not solve the team scoring lockout sending them to a shootout where the Voyageurs' Gabby Jex scored the one and only goal of the shoutout.

With the win, the Vees are now 1-1-1-1 going into a road weekend against Laurier and Waterloo on October 27th and 28th
