WHKY | Voyageurs Ground Golden Hawks

WHKY | Voyageurs Ground Golden Hawks
The Laurentian Voyageurs women hockey team played against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday

The game started off slow as the Voyageurs and Golden Hawks were settling down the nerves and both goalies shutting the door with 5 saves for the Vees' Shanna Dolighan and 7 for the Hawks' Cohen Myer.

The Voyageurs opened up the scoring first in this contest as Myla McCormick scored just 1:23 into the second period. The assist was from Karissa Hoskin, a big first goal from the Voyageurs sending them into an offensive overload after a weak first period offensive attack. Later in the second period the Voyageurs attack did not take their foot off the gas as Maddison Heeney scored her first ever OUA power play goal nearing halfway through the second after the Golden Hawks took a slashing penalty.

As the third period was coming to a close the Voyageurs captain Taylor Weber took a roughing penalty that gave the Golden Hawks a power play opportunity. In a last ditch effort the Golden Hawks pulled their goalie giving them a six on four advantage and resulting in a goal, cutting the Vees lead in half, the goal was scored by Madison MacCulloh and assisted by Emily Visser.

But this last goal would come too late in the period and wouldn't leave enough time for the Golden Hawks to come back, giving the Voyageurs their third win of the season and improving their record to 2-1-1-1.

The Voyageurs have an opportunity to add another win to their record on Sunday as they visit Waterloo for a 2:30pm puck drop.
