WHKY | Golden Hawks Soar Over Voyageurs

WHKY | Golden Hawks Soar Over Voyageurs

The Laurentian Voyageurs played their final game of this 2019 opening weekend against the Laurier Golden Hawks this Sunday, January 6th afternoon.

This game was a crucial win for the Voyageurs as they had an equal opportunity to come out with the win and finally put an end to their seven game loss streak.

The Golden Hawks themselves were on a loss streak therefore both teams were  ready to do what it takes and end both teams win droughts.

Emily Woodhouse started this matchup with some tenacity as she sent a top shelf backhand over Shanna Dolighan just two minutes in to set the Golden Hawks ahead by one.

Laurier capitalized just ten minutes later once the Voyaguers fell into penalty trouble. Morgan Bates put the Golden Hawks up by two against the Voyageurs on the power play and closed out the scoring for the first period.

The Voyageurs offence sparked just halfway through the second period when Abbey Caldwell scored her second goal in just fourteen games, therefore cutting the Golden Hawk lead in half. Payton Bray and Taylor Weber would pick up the assists.

Laurier would respond to the Voyageurs with yet another power play goal by Emily Woodhouse, retaining the Golden Hawk two goal lead and closing the second period.

The third period was eventful nearing the end of regulation as three goals were scored in the last five minutes. Aynsley Harrison was able to beat Dolighan again for the fourth goal in the Golden Hawks favour.

Natalie Lamarche beat Cohen Meyers for the second Voyageur goal and cutting Laurier's lead in half. Julia Giannitsopoulos would pick up her first assist of the season.

Unfortunately that would be the last of the Voyaguer scoring and the Golden Hawks would take the game 5-2 and extend the Voyageurs loss streak to eight games.

The Voyageurs will have two more opportunities to end their drought come January 12th and 13th against Western and Windsor.
