WSOC | Gaels Too Much for Voyageurs

Compared to their previous encounter, a strong defensive display this time around by the Voyageurs against the Queen's Gaels kept in check the offensive prowess of the sixth best team in the country as they lost by a score of 3-1.

The match started poorly for the Voyageurs as just 5:30 minutes in, the Gaels got on the scoreboard courtesy of Jenna Leslie with the assist going to Rebecca Kim. Soon after, at the 8:48 minute mark, the Gaels doubled their lead when a corner kick was clearly away but it found an unmarked Lidia Bradau who crossed the ball back into the penalty box where it was greeted by the head of Jenna Leslie who scored on a beautiful header. The Voyageur defence however, did not disappoint as they valiantly defended wave after wave of Gaels attacks. This defense would eventually pay off as it allowed the Voyageurs to get back into the match when a through pass from Victoria Maria-Galluzzo found veteran forward Mia De Gasperis who did a superb job to out-running her marker and scoring in a one-on-one situation with the goal keeper at the 25:30 minute mark of the match.

"The goal felt good. Finally, got one on Queen's in my five years here" said De Gasperis; describing her jubilation after scoring her first goal against the Queen's Gaels.

But unfortunately, the Voyageurs could not carry on this momentum and score the equalizing goal. The first half would then come to an end with the Gaels up by a score of 2-1.

The second half started the in a similar fashion to the first as the Gaels had an early scoring opportunity but was turned away by the Voyageurs. The Gaels maintained ball possession for a majority of the half and did not really let the Voyageurs surmount a meaningful comeback. In the 80:02 minute of the match, the Gaels would seal the victory by scoring a third goal, coming through the cleats of Maddy Moran.

"Everyone was just playing, trying to have fun which I think gave us a better result against Queen's than last time for sure. We were all happy. Everyone worked hard, played well and it was a good turnout for us" said De Gasperis abut her team's performance on the day post-game. 

The Vees will now suit up for the final match of the regular season tomorrow against the RMC Paladins at noon at James Jerome Sports Complex.
