WSWIM | Gryphons Narrowly Deny Voyageurs' Fifth Consecutive Banner
The Voyageurs swim teams hosted the deBray Divisional Swimming Championships over the weekend, welcoming teams from Brock, Carleton, Guelph, Laurier, Queen's and York to the Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Gold Pool.
The women's team was looking to lay claim to their fifth consecutive banner while the men's squad were in search of their first Divisional crown.
After day 1 of competition on the women's side, it became that it was going to be a three team battle for the crown with the Guelph Gryphons sitting 40 points ahead of the Voyageurs, who were just five points up on the Queen's Gaels.
The Voyageurs started the meet off strong with a first place finish in the 4x50m freestyle relay. From there it was solid team performance, highlighted by veteran Riley Konrad and rookie Carling Stever, who each claimed an individual gold and silver on the afternoon.
Day 2 saw the Voyageurs eagerly anticipating the challenge of catching the Gryphons and defending their Divisional title. Once again, Konrad and Stever got the team off to a strong start, finishing first and second in the 200m IM, with Konrad's time being fast enough to qualify for the U SPORTS Championships in February. Konrad added another victory in the 200m butterfly to set the women up for an exciting finish.
With gap on the Gryphons narrowed to 30.5 points, the Voyageurs left it all in the pool in the final event, the 4x100m freestyle relay, with the A and B teams touching the wall in first and fourth respectively. Unfortunately the Gryphons did just enough to stave off the comeback, finishing in second and seventh in the race to earn the banner by a mere 18.5 points. Queen's rounded out the top three, 115.5 points back of the Voyageurs.
