XC | Voyageurs Reach podium in New York

The Laurentian cross-country running teams competed south of the border this weekend, racing at the Mike Woods Geneseo XC Invitational at Letchworth State Park, near Rochester New York.

The women's squad placed third in a field of 22 teams and 288 runners, while the men placed 13th in a field of 24 teams and 316 competitors. The women scored 105 points with a top-five average time of 23:16 over the 6km course. The men’s score was 303 points with an average time of 27:13 over the 8km course.

The women were once again led by senior Marissa Lobert, who placed 11th with a time of 22:45. She was followed by first year runner, Jenny Bottomley, who placed 22nd with a time of 23:11; Nicole Rich, 31st with a time of 23:24; Megan Crocker, 33rd with a time of 23:30 and Nicole Hessels who was 34th with a time of 23:30. The two displacers were Breanne Stephen who was 44th with a time of 23:51 and Lindsay Greasley who was 103rd in 24:42.

The men were led by Dylan McKevitt who placed 32nd with a time of 26:16. He was followed by rookie, Jerryd McLeod-Maenpaa, who placed 58th in 26:56; Sam Delage who was 87th in 27:24; Jacob Dupuis-Latour who was 101st and 27:33 and Caleb Beland who was 127th in 27:58. Luke Mackrell who placed 138th in 28:10 and Gordie Chown who placed 142nd and 28:16 were the displacers.

Also competing was Laurentian alumnus and current assistant coach, Katie Wismer. She finished 6th overall with a time of 22:17.

“The women really supported each other during this race, with four of them running as a group until the last kilometer,” said assistant coach, Darren Jermyn.

Added, head coach, Dick Moss “The men are making progress, with almost everyone running faster than they did a week ago, said. To finish mid-pack in this large field is definitely encouraging.”

The team’s next competition is the University of Toronto Open on October 16.
