MBB | Voyageurs Prevail Over Lakers in Scrappy Affair

Haroun Mohamed continued his hot streak and his 20 points was enough to guide the Voyageurs to the win against the Nipissing Lakers.

Both teams had a slow start scoring in the first with the Voyageurs really struggling from the free throw line, going 1-6 in the quarter. Luckily for the Voyageurs, Jordan Katchunga scored seven points in the quarter to pace them to a 16-14 lead.

In the second, the pace of play increased and both teams seemed to find their stride. This is where the ball movement and floor spacing for the Voyageurs played a key factor in Mohamed getting his buckets, tallying eight points in the quarter and splashed two big threes from the corner. Still though the game was tied at half time.

Defense was the turning point in the third with Laurentian forcing the Lakers to commit six turnovers leading to easy fast break points for the Voyageurs. Furthermore, the Voyageurs continued to distribute the ball around leading to easy points in the paint.

Heading into the fourth the Voyageurs were up nine but the Lakers came out firing and went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to two points with seven minutes to go. The teams battled back forth, trading baskets with the lead never getting bigger than four again. With 13 seconds left in the game a terrific pass from Cedric Mbiaba led to a Noah Garba game securing layup to give the Voyageurs the win.

The team record improves to 4-5 with a chance to get back to .500 on Saturday when they play the Lakers again at Nipissing.
