MHKY | Voyageurs Lose Special Teams Battle
The Laurentian Voyageurs men's hockey team played their first of a two game series against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks tonight in Oshawa.

As the the playoffs draw near, the Voyageurs sit last in their conference with twelve points and the next closest team is RMC with 15 points. Ontario Tech started the night in seventh, seven points ahead of the Voyageurs so this weekend presented a great opportunity to gain some ground. The two teams met January 9th in Sudbury, a game the Ridgebacks won 5-1.

Tonight's matchup would be a battle for the Vees against the Ridgebacks offensive effort lead by Eastman. The Ridgebacks would pot five goals on Mackenzie Savard, three of them coming from Austin Eastman. Lurette and Belec would get the other two goals.

The Voyageurs wouldn't let Leif Hertz go home with a shutout though as Russel Nowry would get his sixth goal on the season with the help of Jarett Meyer and Scott Gervais for the one and only Voyageur goal.

The Voyageurs were outshot 42-25 as Savard made 37 saves and Hertz made 24. The real difference maker was the effectiveness of both teams' powerplays: the Ridgebacks scored three powerplay goals on five chances, while the Voyageurs failed to convert on their six chances.

The Voyageurs would lose the first of two games against the Ridgebacks 5-1 but will replay them Saturday in hopes to leave Oshawa with a win.
