WHKY | Strong Defensive Effort Leads Vees Past #2 Blues

WHKY | Strong Defensive Effort Leads Vees Past #2 Blues

The Laurentian Voyageurs women's hockey team played their final game of the weekend against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Blues had received their first loss of the season against the Nipssing Lakers last night making them 7-1-0 when they arrived in Sudbury. The Blues came into the weekend ranked #2 in U Sports, and as the top OUA team.

The Vees and Blues battled hard and long but neither teams were rewarded with much. The Blues would beat Dolighan first almost halfway through the second period on Gabrielle De Serres' goal at nine minutes and forty-six seconds.

The Voyageurs would return the favour two minutes later on Madeline Albert and her fellow cohort after Karrisa Hoskin battled hard on a one-on-one opportunity deep in the offensive zone and was able to sneak a shot over the pad of Albert. Abbey Caldwell and Hannah Skrinar would pick up the assists.

Both goalies would remain solid through three periods only letting in one goal a piece meaning that three frames of regulation was not enough to find the winner and this game would require an overtime period. After seven minutes of overtime keeping fans on the edges of their seats, overtime deemed to be the resolution was not successful and the Blues and Vees' headed to a shootout.

After three shooters, Morgan McCann and Regan Toltesi would both score giving the Vees the win and sending the Blues back to Toronto winless in the weekend.

The Vees split the weekend and face the Queen's Gaels and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks this coming weekend.
