MBB | Voyageurs Overpower Mustangs

The Laurentian Voyageurs won convincingly on Friday night against the Western Mustangs as they defeated their foe by a score of 84-70. 

The Voyageurs started strong as they went on a 17-8 run to open the match. They scored 28 points in the first quarter, of which 13 were scored by veteran guard and reigning two-time OUA athlete of the year Kadre Gray. The second leading scorer for the Voyageurs was Gaetan Chamand with eight points. The Voyageurs shot 70.65 from the field and outscored the Mustangs 28-20 in the quarter. Additionally, they restricted the Mustangs to just 35.0% shooting. 

The second quarter, however, was much more competitive than the first. The Voyageurs had an impressive 53.8% shooting quarter but outscored the Mustangs by just two points. The Voyageurs were led Joseph Hlady with nine points and Kadre Gray with six points. On the other hand, the Mustangs were led by Nikola Farkic with six points and Julian Walker with four points. The Voyageurs at one point opened a 13 point lead but finished the quarter with a 10 point lead as they led by a score of 47-37. 

In the third quarter, both teams went toe-to-toe. They both scored 16 points each on similar shooting percentage (33.3% for the Voyageurs and 31.3% for the Mustangs). But, the Voyageurs maintained a 10 point lead at the end of the quarter. 

Due to strong play early in the match, the Voyageurs would squander their ten point lead in the fourth quarter. They shot 44.4% from the field at twice held a 17 point lead in the quarter. Haroun Mohamed led the way for the Voaygeurs with nine points and was followed by Sam Ivey with five points. In the end, the Voyageurs closed out the match with strong offensive showing and defeated the Western Mustangs by a score of 84-70. 

The Voyageurs will now have a day to rest before they take on their long-time arch-rivals, the Nippising Lakers on a matinee Sunday. Tip off is scheduled for 3 pm.
