MBB - Voyageurs miss out on victory in physical match against Ravens

The men's basketball team played against the Carleton Ravens on Saturday night. They were defeated 72-63 in fairly physical game.

In the first quarter, an early foul by the Ravens gave Kamil Dia Hantchi two successful free throw attempts, while Caillou Lacroix executed a jump shot and a layup. Daniel Muila and Pierre Mukandila both made a layup a few seconds later and Evan Munro scored a combination of 3 points. With three minutes left in the quarter, Muila, Lacroix and Mukandila scored 6 points together, giving the Voyageurs a 19-16 lead.

In the second quarter, Lacroix made a layup and got fouled at the three-point line a minute later, leading to three made free throws. With the game taking a physical turn, Lacroix got fouled two more times, in which he made two successful free throws each time. With five minutes left until halftime, Mukandila scored 5 points, which kept Laurentian in the lead, with only a 3-point difference.

Coming back from halftime, the Ravens quickly took the lead while the Voyageurs were blanked for almost five minutes. Hantchi scored a layup and two free throws, and Mukandila got fouled and scored two free throws himself. At the end of the quarter, Hantchi let the ball fly from the 3-point line and scored, giving the Voyageurs a 3-point deficit to work with in the last ten minutes.

In the last quarter, Hantchi repeated the motion from the last quarter and scored another 3-pointer, and got fouled shortly after, leading to two more successful free throws. In the last six minutes, Mukandila, Lacroix, Muila, and Hantchi made a combination of 10 points, leaving them with a one-point deficit in the last two minutes of the game. The Ravens scored 8 points to take an even bigger lead and winning the match 72-63.

The standout performers were Caillou Lacroix with 20 points, Kamil Dia Hantchi with 18 points and 7 rebounds, and Pierre Mukandila with 15 points.

The Voyageurs are back in action at home this weekend, as they host the Windsor Lancers on Friday, followed by the Western Mustangs in a triple header game day on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm on Friday night, and 3 pm Saturday afternoon.
