MBB - Voyageurs split the weekend with win against Algoma

On Sunday afternoon, the men's basketball team hosted the Algoma Thunderbirds. The men were able to pull off a 95-73 win, to add another win to their regular season record.

In the first quarter, Ismael Konate put Laurentian on the board with a free throw, while Cedric Mbiaba scored a layup. A minute later, Konate scored a layup himself and Kamil Dia Hantchi made his first 3-pointer of the game. With an 8-0 lead for the Voyageurs, Algoma called a timeout. Shortly after, Gaetan Chamand scored 2 points, followed by another layup from Konate. With less than four minutes to go, Hantchi and Chikosi Boardi each scored a 3-point shot, ending the quarter with a 20-14 lead for the Voyageurs.

In the next quarter, Konate scored a combination of 3 points, Caillou Lacroix added 4 points and Daniel Muila added 4 points to the board. Halfway through the quarter, the Voyageurs did not let up as proven by Hantchi, Mbiaba, and Pierre Mukandila with a combination of 10 points. The Voyageurs were nearly 15 points from doubling Algoma's score. With two minutes left, Konate scored 4 points and Mukandila added another 3-pointer to the score. The Voyageurs were ahead 47-34 going into halftime.

Coming back from the first half, Konate scored first for the third time, Hantchi scored a jump shot and Mbiaba made a layup. With five minutes remaining, Chamand and Konate each scored two points, Lacroix and Hantchi scored a combination of 4 points and Mukandila scored his third 3-pointer of the game. With a minute left, Boardi and Hantchi scored 5 points together, giving the Voyageurs a 12-point lead.

To finish the game, Muila scored 5 more points, Chamand and Mbiaba scored 5 points combined and Mukandila added a free throw to the score. In the last five minutes, the Voyageurs dominated, scoring a combination of 13 points from Mbiaba, Chamand, Mukandila, Muila, and Boardi. The Voyageurs took the 95-73 win.

The standout performers were Ismael Konate with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Pierre Mukandila with 15 points and 4 rebounds, and Daniel Muila with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The Voyageurs are back in action on Saturday, as they take on the Guelph Gryphons in their last game of the season. The game will be played in the Ben Avery at 6pm.
