MSOC | Voyageurs Tie Varsity Blues, Prepare for Playoff Rematch

MSOC | Voyageurs Tie Varsity Blues, Prepare for Playoff Rematch

The Laurentian Voyageurs men's soccer team played out a 2-2 tie against the Toronto Varsity Blues in their final regular season match and fine tuned their play for their playoff run.

Fireworks started early when Evan Stronach put the Voyageurs up one goal to nothing at the 4:04 mark of the match. The Voyageurs dominated most aspects of the play in the first half by controlling the ball more and recording a greater number of shots than their opponent. However, they were unable to add to their one goal lead. The Voyageurs defence was spectacular as they allowed only two shots on goal in the half; neither of which found the back of the net. Thusly, the first half would then come to an end with the Vees up one goal to nothing.

The second half started with the Varsity Blues applying some added pressure on the Voyageurs defence in hopes of acquiring an equalizer. To their delight, at the 67:02 mark of the match, Jack Wadden of the Varsity Blues scored to level the scoreline. The Varsity Blues maintain their style of play and at the 84:08 mark of the match were rewarded for their efforts when Michael Mattix scored an unassisted goal to put his team up by two goals to Laurentian's just one.

However, the Voyageurs would respond soon in the 90th minute when the Voyageurs earned a corner kick. The resulting corner kick led straight to Augustus Oku who would not make any mistake to deposit the ball at the back of the net, netting his third goal of the season and also the equalizing goal of the match. In the end, neither team would then be able to find the winning goal and their regular season game to an end with a 2-2 tie.

The Voyageurs finish the season with a 5-9-2 record and secured the sixth seed for the playoffs. They are matched up against the same Varsity Blues in the first round and the tilt goes down this Wednesday at 8pm at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. The match will be broadcasted live on OUA.tv.
