MSOC | Voyageurs Drop Physical Affair

MSOC | Voyageurs Drop Physical Affair

The 2019 soccer season kicked off on Saturday as the Laurentian Voyageurs were up against a familiar and formidable foe, the Nipissing Lakers. The Voyageurs came up on the wrong side of the scoresheet as they dropped the season opener by a score of 2-1.

Both sides were evenly matched throughout the game with similar statistics in shots on goal, corner kicks and saves departments. But, the Voyageurs drew first blood early when Augustus Oku scored an unassisted goal in the 9th minute. Tensions would flare in the next ten minutes as each team would earn a yellow card with five total being handed out in the game.

Both teams would jostle back and forth to gain additional average but the Lakers would be the ones successful in notching an equalizer in the 39th minute via a goal by Ryan Roy with an assist from Mason Lee. The first half would come to an end with the score all level at one goal apiece.

The second half was more or less the same as first. Both teams pretty even and battling tooth and nail to get the go-ahead goal. But, to the dismay of Voyageurs and their fans, Deven Doodnath of the Lakers scored an unassisted goal with seven minutes to spare to put the Lakers on top. The Voyageurs were unable to respond and drop the season opener by a score of 2-1.

The Voyageurs will now attempt to get back to .500 tomorrow when they host the Trent Excalibur. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:15 pm.
