WBB | Voyageurs Squeeze Past Lakers

WBB | Voyageurs Squeeze Past Lakers

The Voyageurs escaped with a narrow win on Sunday afternoon as they beat their longtime rivals, the Nipissing Lakers, by a score of 71-69.

Both teams were evenly matched. They both shot under 40% from the field and but to the credit of the Voyageurs, they shot 10% better than their opponents in the first quarter which helped them in securing a six point lead at its conclusion. Danielle Reid was the top scorer for the Voyageurs with nine points and she was followed suite by Kayla Deschetalets with four points. Nicole Budd was the leading scorer for the Lakers and she was followed by three of her teammates who all scored two points each.

However, the second quarter saw a turn of fortunes for the Lakers. The Lakers came out swinging. They shot 52.9% from the field and restricted the Voyageurs to 37.5% shooting. This offensive effort helped the Lakers draw level when the first half came to a close. Natalie Martinez led the way with nine points for the Lakers, followed by Megan McCarter with four points. On the other hand, for the Voyageurs, Maria La Rosa with six points and Sidney Crawford with five points led the way in the quarter.

In the third quarter, both teams jostled back and forth to gain an upper hand. However, unfortunately for the Voyageurs though, the Lakers shot 50.0% from the field and finished the quarter with a five point lead. Maria Walsh led this offensive from the Lakers as she added nine of 16 points in the quarter.

But, the Voyageurs did not lose heart and made their charge in the final quarter of the match. Gabby Schaffner came alive and added nine points via three three-point buckets which went a long way in securing the win for her team. Other notable mentions from the Voyageurs include Bailey Tabin with six points and Kayla Deschatelets with five points that all contributed in the Voyageur victory. Equally important, was their defensive efficiency. They restricted the Lakers to just 28.6% shooting which halted their offensive intensity.

The Voyageurs will now look to make it two wins in a row on Friday, November 15 when they travel to Waterloo to take on the Waterloo Warriors.
