WBB | Fourth Ranked Gee-Gees Roll Past Voyageurs
The Voyageurs concluded their road trip to the nation's capital with a loss to the fourth ranked team in the country, the Ottawa Gee-Gees by a score of 68-41 on Saturday evening.
Both teams struggled out of the gate. The Gee-Gees managed to grab a five point lead with 7:49 left in the quarter when they went cold. Neither team was able to score for the next foreseeable future as both managed to get defensive stops and kept the other from scoring. It was until 3:57 remaining in the quarter when the scoring drought was broken by the Gee-Gees when Natsuki Szczokin drained a three-point bucket. The Voyageurs earned their first point via a made free throw by Danielle Reid just 35 seconds later. In the end, the Voyageurs finished the first quarter trailing 14-3.
The second quarter was not much better for the Vees as they got outscored 18-8. The Gee-Gees shot 35.0% from the field, whereas the Voyageurs shot 12.9% from the field. Leading scorer for the Gee-Gees included Brooklynn McAlear-Fanus with 11 points and Tyra Blizzard with six points. Leading scorers for the Voyageurs at the half included Kayla Deschatelets with five points and Bailey Tabin with three points. The first half then came to an end with the Voyageurs down 51-24.
With each quarter the Voyageurs improved offensively but it was not enough for them to earn a victory. They were outscored in the third quarter 19-13 but tied the Gee-Gees in the fourth as they scored 17 points each. The Voyageurs shot just slightly better than the Gee-Gees in the second half with 32.4% as compared to 31.6% of the Gee-Gees. For the game, the Gee-Gees shot 33.3% from the field, whereas the Voyageurs shot 23.1%. Brooklynn McAlear-Fanus and Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu led the way in scoring for the Gee-Gees with 19 and 18 points respectively. Kayla Deschatelets and Bailey Tabin on the other hand, led the way for the Voyageurs with 14 points each.
The Voyageurs have completed the first half of the season and will resume play on January 10th when they host the aforementioned Ottawa Gee-Gees at Ben Avery Gymnasium at 6 pm.
