The Laurentian Voyageurs Women's basketball kick started the second half of their season with a convincing 60-44 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds Sunday afternoon.

Laurentian came out of the gates flying in the first quarter on both ends of the floor. On defence, the Voyageurs limited Algoma to 0-6 shooting from the floor and constantly made it difficult for their opponents to get any good looks inside the paint. On offence, the Voyageurs utilized a strong paint presence, forcing their way into easy layups and held a healthy 21-9 lead going into the second quarter.

The second quarter was a continuation of the strong defense displayed by Laurentian, again limiting the Thunderbirds to poor shots and unnecessary turnovers throughout the course of the quarter. The offense did slow down a bit, shooting just 36% from the field in the second, but they were still able to add to their lead, going up 35-19 into half-time.

As Laurentian came back out for the second half, the story of strong, stingy defense only grew. Their opponents were held scoreless in the quarter on 0-8 shooting while Laurentian picked up three steals and forced five turnovers.  As the buzzer Sounded to signal the end of the third quarter, the score read Laurentian 49 - Algoma 19.

The fourth quarter saw Algoma mount a formidable comeback, outscoring Laurentian 25-11 in the quarter, but the Voyageurs' high intensity start and strong defensive scheme throughout the majority of the game led them to a comfortable 60-44 win in the end

The game's standout performers included the twin duo of Sydney Tabin and Bailey Tabin, who pitched in with 13 and 14 points, respectively, with each pulling down nine rebounds. The team also got 10 points from Amber May and 11 points from Arielle Douillette off the bench.

Laurentian is on the road again next weekend as they travel to McMaster on Friday to face the Marauders and York on Saturday to face the Lions. Tip-off for both games is scheduled for 6pm.
