WBB - Lakers edge Voyageurs in first game of weekend series

On Friday night, the women's basketball team traveled to North Bay to take on their northern rivals. The Voyageurs were unable to add a win to their record, losing the match 77-71 to the Nipissing Lakers.

To start the game, Claudia Pellerin scored a jump shot, followed by two free throws by Emilie Lafond. The Lakers were quick to answer with 7 points within two minutes, to take an early lead. At the sixth minute, Lauren Robertson-Martin scored her first two points with free throws, while Lafond scored her first layup of the game. In the last two minutes, Monica Jean-Baptiste and Molly Adams scored a combination of 6 points, as the Lakers were ahead 23-16 going into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Pellerin opened up scoring for the Vees once again. As a result of an aggressive defence by the Lakers, the Voyageurs were scoreless for 4 minutes, until Pellerin netted two more free throws on the board. Halfway through, Aneisha Rismond scored her first four points, while Robertson-Martin scored two more free throws. The Lakers were still in the lead 46-35 going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Rileigh Smith scored four free throws followed by a layup. In the last minute, Robertson-Martin scored two layups and Adams scored two free throws. The Voyageurs were 11 points behind the Lakers going into the last quarter.

To finish the game, Pellerin added two more layups to the board and Lyndelle Joseph scored two free throws. Smith, Pellerin and Adams scored 7 points together and Megan Axiak sunk two 3-point shots. With a 4-point difference, the Lakers called a timeout to get organized. The Voyageurs dropped the game 77-71 in the first game of the weekend series.

The standout performers were Claudia Pellerin with 20 points, Lauren Robertson-Martin with 9 points and 6 rebounds, and Rileigh Smith with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

The Voyageurs are back in action on Saturday, as they take on the Lakers once again, this time on home court. Tip off is set for 6pm.
