WBB - Voyageurs drop last game of the regular season to Guelph

On Saturday afternoon, the women's basketball team hosted the Guelph Gryphons in their last game of the regular season. Despite a great effort, the Voyageurs ended the game with a 91-69 loss.

To start the game, the Voyageurs scored at the eighth minute mark, with two free throws from Emilie Lafond and a jump shot twenty seconds later. A minute later, Molly Adams netted her first 2 points of the game and Claudia Pellerin scored two layups and a free throw. The Gryphons took an early lead, which led to a timeout call by Laurentian. Coming back from the timeout, Megan Axiak scored the first 3-pointer for the Voyageurs, followed by the second one from Audrey-Anne Labreche. With a free throw from Adams in the last minute of the game, the Voyageurs were only trailing by 6 points going into the next quarter.

In the second quarter, Lafond started strong with a layup in the first six seconds, followed by a layup and free throw from Pellerin once again. While at the net, Lafond got fouled, leading to two successful free throw attempts. Halfway through the quarter, Lafond, Pellerin, and Labreche made a combination of 12 points, bringing them to the last two minutes of the quarter. Lafond and Labreche both made two free throws to end the first half, trailing 41-55.

Coming back from halftime, Lafond scored first a third time with a free throw, while Adams scored 2 more points. With six minutes to go, Pellerin and Axiak both netted a 3-point shot, and the Voyageurs were then scoreless until the two-minute mark, where Lauren Robertson-Martin made two free throws. To end the quarter, Axiak netted her third 3-pointer of the game, however, the Voyageurs had lots of catching up to do in the next quarter, being down by 17 points.

In the final quarter, Lafond added another layup and jump shot to the board and Melanie Cloutier scored a 3-pointer and a jump shot. With three minutes to go in the game, Cloutier netted 2 more points, Pellerin scored a layup and a free throw, which concluded scoring for the Voyageurs. In their last game of the regular season, the Voyageurs were defeated by the Gryphons, 91-69.

The standout performers were Claudia Pellerin with 22 points and 6 rebounds, Emilie Lafond with 17 points and 6 rebounds, and Megan Axiak with 9 points.

As this game was also the senior send off, the women's basketball team highlighted two graduating players. Best of luck to Monica Jean-Baptiste (guard, #6) and Rileigh Smith (forward, #21).

The Voyageurs will be back in action when they take on the uOttawa Gee-Gees in the first round of the playoffs.
