WBB - Voyageurs fall to Gee-Gees in playoffs

On Wednesday night, the women's basketball team played the uOttawa Gee-Gees in the Nation's Capital in the first round of the playoffs. The Gee-Gees, who were ranked fifth beat the Voyageurs who were ranked twelfth, by a score of 79-49.

Audrey-Anne Labreche started off strong for the Voyageurs, netting a jump shot thirty seconds into the game. The Gee-Gees scored shortly after and demonstrated excellent defensive skills, as the Voyageurs were scoreless until Molly Adams scored a jump shot at the fourth-minute mark. A minute later, Adams repeated the jump shot, while Emilie Lafond scored 2 points and a free throw. With a 16-point lead for the Gee-Gees, the Voyageurs had some catching up to do in the next quarter.

In the second quarter, Claudia Pellerin scored her first two jump shots of the game, while Aneisha Rismond netted 2 points for the Voyageurs. Even though the Gee-Gees kept scoring from the three-point line, Laurentian refused to give up. While attempting a hook shot, Lafond got fouled, leading to two made free throws and Labreche also got fouled thirty seconds later, making one free throw. With under three minutes to go, Lafond scored another jump shot, and Lauren Robertson-Martin and Melanie Cloutier both scored one free throw to conclude the scoring. The Voyageurs were trailing 47-22 going into the second half.

Starting off the third quarter was a jump shot by Lafond and a jump shot by Rismond. With two more fouls against the Gee-Gees, Lafond and Robertson-Martin went to the line and made one free throw each. Both teams were scoreless for two minutes until Rismond sunk another jump shot and Adams added another 2 points to the board. At the two-minute mark, Lafond netted another jump shot and 2 free throws, while Megan Axiak scored the first 3-point shot for the Voyageurs. Laurentian was behind 68-39 going into the last quarter.

In the last quarter, Pellerin scored a 3-point shot, Rismond scored 2 points and Cloutier made a free throw. Although the Voyageurs were playing great defensively, the Gee-Gees still had a big lead, which made it nearly impossible for the Voyageurs to catch up. With three minutes to go, Labreche scored a free throw and Sophie Moore netted the last 3-points for Laurentian. The Voyageurs were eliminated from playoff contention, falling to the Gee-Gees 79-49.

The standout performers were Emilie Lafond with 14 points and 4 rebounds, Aneisha Rismond with 8 points and 7 rebounds, and Claudia Pellerin with 7 points.

This concludes the women's basketball team's season, ending with a 6-16 record.
