WSOC | Voyageurs Suffer Tough Loss in Season Opener

The women's soccer team opened up their season as they hosted the Trent Excalibur today at the Laurentian Soccer Field.  In a day that seemingly saw all four seasons blow through the Nickel City, a deflected shot was the difference as the Excalibur walked away with the 1-0 win.

As the game kicked off, it was the Excalibur who seemed to be on their front foot, applying constant pressure on the Voyageurs back line and goaltender, Hunter Jones.  That pressure broke through in the 19th minute when a Maddie Walter shot deflected off the back of a Laurentian defender and eluded Jones.  The Voyageurs tried to respond but couldn't find their way through the back line of Trent, only managing one shot on target in the first half.

To begin the second half, the skies opened up and really put a damper on the flow of the game.  Neither team could muster much by the way of connecting passes which led to no real scoring opportunities for either side.  The game finished with the 1-0 score line.  Jones had eight saves in the loss while Imogen Bellinger turned away the only shot she faced for the shutout.

The Voyageurs will hit the pitch again on Saturday when the visit the Nipissing Lakers in the front end of a home and home set.
