The Laurentian varsity track and field team travelled to York University this past weekend to compete at the York Christmas Open Indoor Track & Field meet.   First-year criminology student Shelley Hladin (Chartierville, QC) made her first competition as a Vee a memorable one by breaking a 51-year old school record in the women's long jump.  Hladin's best jump of 5.36 metres eclipsed the previous record of 5.25 metres set by Barb Dennis in 1972. Hladin's performance qualified her for the OUA Championships next February and earned her a bronze medal.

Third year architecture student Tristan Routhier (Saint Sixte, QC) also had an impressive opening meet, winning gold in the men's 300m event, 36.73 seconds and also placing 9th in the men's 60 metre event, 7.06 seconds.

"We are really pleased with our performances this weekend", noted Vees Assistant and Lead Sprints and Jumps Coach, Jim Taylor. "The goal was to knock some rust off and execute some of the technical work we have been doing since early in the fall.  Getting a new school record and two athletes OUA qualified this early are great signs for the team."
