The Voyageurs varsity track and field team returned to action on January 6th, with a few athletes competing at the Sharon Anderson Memorial Track & Field meet, hosted by the University of Toronto.

To start off, first-year criminology student Shelley Hladin started the new year by eclipsing her own school long jump record, in which she set last month. Her best of 5.44 metres broke her previous record by eight centimetres. This jump earned her a gold medal. In the triple jump competition, Hladin placed fifth with a jump of 11.12 metres, which ranks her #4 all-time at Laurentian.

"A great start to 2024 for Shelley for both long and triple jump. Each time she hits the runway, she has been implementing some technical changes and it is paying off with improving performance" said assistant coach Jim Taylor.

Onto the track events, third-year nursing student Kristen Mrozewski ran the 600 metres with a time of 1.39.12, which landed her on the podium with a bronze medal. Second-year nursing student Brandon Radey placed twenty-first in the men's 300-metre event, with a time of 38.53. Lastly, second-year engineering student Travis Annett also placed twenty-first, but in the 600-metre event, in a time of 1:36.31.

"Kristen qualified for the OUA Championships with her performance today, and both she and Brandon ran near-personal bests. This is a very early meet for us, so that shows great promise for the season" said assistant coach Dick Moss.

The full 25-member track and field team will compete at the Don Wright Challenge at Western University on January 20th.
