The Laurentian Voyageurs cross country running teams returned to Ontario University Athletics (OUA) competition this past weekend at the 45th Ramsey Tour 5km hosted on the Laurentian campus. The Vees squared off against teams from Nipissing and Algoma universities, Cambrian College, and runners from the community as part of this long-standing early Fall race hosted by the Sudbury Masters Running Club.

The LU women were led by third-year nursing student, Kristen Mrozewski  (Sudbury) who won the women's 5km race in a time of 18 minutes and 43 seconds.  This time is the sixth fastest time in school history at this race. The Vees also claimed second and third place in the women's race with fifth year education student, Angela Mozzon (Sudbury) running 19:37 and fourth year biomedical biology student, Meredith Kusnierczyk (Sudbury) crossing the line in 20:18.

Also contributing to the LU's team score were rookie Charlotte Grenier (Sudbury) who ran 21:32 and fifth year education student,  Abbey Maillet (Dundas) in 21:52.

Laurentian won the women's team title with a low score of 18 points, with Nipissing placing second with 41 points.

On the men's side, fifth year accounting student, Cameron Date (Haileybury) was the top Laurentian scorer, placing fourth overall, in a time of 16 minutes and 40 seconds.  Other scorers for the Vees included third year health promotion student, Patrick Leroux (Wingham) - 8th in 17:20; rookie Aurel Fox (Sudbury), 11th in 17:55; rookie SPAD student, Owen Roney (Sudbury) in 18:15 and second year engineering student, Travis Annett (Sudbury) in 18:19.

The Laurentian men placed second in the team competition with a score of 29 points, just two points behind Nipissing University.

"Kristen definitely put the work in this summer and established a solid aerobic base that contributed to her excellent result today", commented LU Head Coach, Darren Jermyn. "It was also great to see new personal bests by several of our senior athletes including Angela, Meredith and Cameron.  Like Kristen, they have spent the past 4 months logging some decent mileage in preparation for the grind that the OUA cross country season brings."

The cross country Vees will be back in OUA regular season action at the Western Invitational on September 23rd in London.
