SWIM | Schouten's Golden Trifecta Leads Voyageurs

The Voyageurs swim teams were in St. Catharines competing at the OUA Swimming Championships over the weekend and came home with a trio of gold medals, a pair of silver medals, a bronze medal, a school record and a combined 6th place finish.

 

The Championships got off to a fantastic start when the men's 200m freestyle relay team, comprised of Matt Schouten, Samuel Boily-Dufour, Gabriel Fenn and Chris Eastick, touched the wall in second place in a time of 1:32.50.  On the individual side, the team qualified for eight B final swims and three A final swims. Schouten cashed in in the 50m backstroke, touching the wall in 25.72 seconds to tie for gold. Riley Konrad grabbed some hardware in the 400m IM, finishing in 4:58.23 to earn the silver medal.

 

Day two of the Championships saw Voyageurs qualify for 10 B final swims and three A final swims.  Schouten led the charge for the Voyageurs, touching the wall in first place in a time of 22.59 in the 50m freestyle for his second gold medal of the meet and third overall.  The men's 800m freestyle relay team of Eastick, Mitchell Cox, Fenn and Schouten made school history on day two as well.  The quartet knocked more than 11 seconds off of their seed time to grab the bronze medal and break a 25 year old school record.

 

Day three was a mirror image of day two with 10 B final swims and three A final swims.  Schouten once again led the way with his 3rd gold medal of the Championship, this time in the 100m freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 50.00 seconds.

 

At the end of the Championship, Konrad and Schouten were each honoured with an OUA Award of Distinction. The Award of Distinction is awarded to any graduating male or female OUA swimmer for an outstanding career in the OUA and USPORTS. The award is given to any swimmer who has medaled in individual events at the OUA Championships in three or more years, and has scored points at the USPORTS championships.

 

Members of both teams who have qualified for nationals will be back in the pool prepping for Vancouver in two weeks' time while the OUA Championships marks the end of the season for the rest of the swim team.
