BSB | Voyageurs Endure Rough Start to Season at Home
The Laurentian Voyageurs Men's Baseball team began their season at home against the Queen's Gaels on Saturday before welcoming the York Lions to the Nickel City on Sunday.
Saturday brought the Gaels to town for a two game set with Laurentian looking to start the season off on the front foot. Game one kicked off with a tough first inning as before the Vees could hit the sticks they already found themselves behind 3-0. Laurentian began to battle back as in the bottom of the third 4 straight batters reached base combining for 2 runs cutting the lead to 4-3 at the end of 3 innings. However it was not to be, Queen's continued to pile on runs as they scored in each inning of the game other than the 2nd and came away with a 9-3 victory in game 1.
In game two of the afternoon Laurentian once again struggled to stop the high flying Gaels offense as in the blink of an eye Queen's shot out to a 7-1 lead after 2 innings. The Vees tried once again to slowly cut into the lead as they put 2 up in the third to cut the lead to 7-3. However Queen's blew up for 9 runs in the fourth and pulled away to a second victory of the day.
On Sunday the Voyageurs welcomed the York Lions to town. Callum Belshaw was the man tasked with the start in game 1. As they were looking to bounce back from a rough first day of the year. However, from the first pitch it seemed like the Lions had Laurentian's number as by the end of the 2nd inning York had flown out to a 7-1 lead. With that big of a deficit being faced so early on it was always going to be tough to overcome and in the end Laurentian would come up short falling to the Lions 12-3.
Game two on Sunday looked almost like a carbon copy of game 1. The Lions were able to jump out to an early lead before the Laurentian bats could really get going at all as a tough weekend would end with their second loss of the day as York would go on to win it by a score of 12-2 in the second game of the afternoon.
Laurentian's bright spot of the weekend came in the form of shortstop Andrew Weber who went 4-7 at the plate with a run and an RBI on Saturday before following it up with a 2-4 day on Sunday. The Vees take to the road for the first time next weekend in The Six as they face off against the TMU Bold and the Toronto Varsity Blue Saturday and Sunday respectively.
