The Laurentian Voyageurs Men's Baseball Team took a trip down to York University this past weekend in their OUA Championship Qualifier against the York Lions, Toronto Varsity Blues and TMU Bold with the winner qualifying for the Final Four OUA Championships in Ottawa next weekend.
As the Vees took to the field Friday afternoon their first opponent was the TMU Bold. The regular season saw the Bold take both games convincingly. This meant Laurnetian had revenge on their mind coming into one of the biggest games of the season.
A very quiet game saw the score at 1-0 for TMU going into the top of 6th inning, before Laurentian's Reid Debert's double and Kyle Kennedy's triple each scored runs giving the Voyageurs a 2-1 lead. After TMU tied the game at 2-2, both teams then exchanged runs in the 9th to make it 4-4. This forced a 10th inning. In this inning the Voyageurs came up with 3 runs through a combination of TMU errors and a clutch single from Anthony Gutscher to make it 7-4. After a shutdown bottom of the 10th Laurentian would go on to win game one of the qualifier.
The following day the Voyageurs would play two games. In the early game they would face off against the Toronto Varsity Blues, a game that would end in a 9-0 defeat.
In the late game Laurentian would come up against the York Lions with the winner earning a spot in the qualifier final the following day. As this game went into the 6th inning the Lions seemed to have a comfortable 5-2 lead which would get built on by an 11 run inning in the 6th seeming to put themselves out of the Voyageurs reach. However the Vees would fight back as they would put 7 up of their own in the bottom half of the 6th cutting the lead to 16-9 and then another 5 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th which meant going into the final inning the game stood at 19-16. In the end though it wasn't meant to be as 4 runs in the top of the 9th put the Lions out of reach as they would go on to win 23-19 knocking out the Voyageurs and ending their season.
This past weekend marked the end of the Voyageurs season finishing the year with a record 4-13 and finishing 3rd in their OUA Qualifier.
