CURL | Voyageurs Women Golden Again

CURL | Voyageurs Women Golden Again

The Voyageurs women's curling team entered Tuesday's U SPORTS Championship game against the Brock Badgers with one colour in mind; gold.  After a well played, back and forth game, it was the Voyageurs who drew the button in the 10th end to win their second national title in three years.

With Brock being the higher seed for the game, by way of their round robin win over the Voyageurs, they had choice of rock or hammer.  The Badgers decided to forgo beginning the game with hammer and opted for their choice in rocks instead; a decision that would prove costly in the end.

With the Badgers looking to force to a single to open the game, Brock skip, Terri Weeks, came up light on both of her draws, leaving Voyageurs shot caller, Kira Brunton, a draw to the full 8-foot to open the game with a three.  After blanking the second, the teams played a little money see, monkey do as both squads continued to freeze on top of the opposition's rock until Brunton was a touch heavy with her last, allowing Brock to hit and stick for a deuce.

From that point forward, it was a chess match, each team forcing the other to singles with Laurentian scoring in the even ends and Brock tallying in the odd ends.  Heading into the 10th, up by one with hammer, the Voyageurs were just looking to keep the house clean to secure the victory.  Everything was playing out as planned until Weeks drew to the back of the 4-foot fully buried.  Unfazed, Brunton stepped into the hack and delivered a great draw to the nose of the Badgers' stone for a single point and the national championship.
