TRCK | Zongo Grabs Silver at OUA Championship

Third-year Law and Justice student, Marvin Zongo (Burkina Faso), continued his record-breaking indoor track and field season by winning a silver medal at the Ontario University (OUA) Championships this past weekend at York University.  Zongo's fourth round jump of 15.02 metres stood up as the second best performance of the competition. Femi Akinduro, from the University of Toronto, won the event, setting a new OUA record of 15.58 metres.  Zongo's season to date has seen him break the Laurentian school triple jump record twice, in addition to establishing new school records in the long jump and 60 metres.

The silver medal earned by Zongo, was the first medal by a Laurentian athlete at the OUA Championships since Leila Angrand won gold in the 3,000m and bronze in the 1500m in 2007.

Zongo also placed seventh in the men's long jump competition with a best jump of 6.80 metres.

Laurentian's other top ten performance came from rookie standout and first year Nursing student, Kristen Mrozewski (Sudbury).  Mrozewksi placed 10th in the women's 1000 metre race in a time of 3:03.00.

Zongo will now move on to compete in both the long jump and triple jump at the U Sports National Championships in St. John, New Brunswick, March 31st to April 2nd.  He is currently ranked third in the nation in long jump and fourth in the triple jump.

"Obviously Marvin's medal is a very proud moment for the program.  It has been a long time coming. Track and Field at the OUA level has definitely become the launching pad for athletes to transition to international competition.  Fifteen former OUA athletes competed at the recent 2020 Tokyo Olympic Summer Games last year, so you know winning a medal at this level is no small feat", commented Head Coach, Darren Jermyn. "Marvin also had to overcome some adversity this weekend as he sustained an ankle injury at the York Open in February.  Coaches Jim Taylor and Ryan Taylor did a fantastic job in altering his training program to ensure he was ready to compete this weekend.  Ryan then made some key changes to Marvin's triple jump approach mid-competition and he responded with his massive jump.  Definitely a team effort and we look forward to watching Marvin represent Laurentian at the U Sports championships."
