TRCK | Zongo Just Shy of U SPORTS Medal, Finishes With Two Top-10's

Third-year Law and Justice student, Marvin Zongo (Burkina Faso), saved his best performance of the season for when it counted the most.  Competing at the U SPORTS Championships in St. John, New Brunswick, Zongo placed fourth in the men's triple jump, setting a new personal best and school record of 15.09 metres.  The mark was just eight centimetres back of the bronze medal position and was also the fourth time Zongo established a new Laurentian triple jump record this season. Zongo also established new school records in the 60 metres and long jump events this season.

The triple jump competition at this year's U SPORTS Championships was the deepest field since 2004, the last time all three medal winners eclipsed the fifteen metre mark.

Earlier in the competition, Zongo also competed in the Men's Long Jump, placing tenth with a best jump of 6.64 metres.  This mark was well below his personal best of 7.24 metres but Zongo was able to refocus leading into the triple jump competition. "Marvin left it all on the track when it mattered most", noted Assistant Coach, Ryan Taylor.  "Having the mental toughness and the ability to bounce back after his long jump competition the day prior is what we are most proud of."  Lead Sprint and Horizontal Jumps Coach, Jim Taylor agreed, noting, "We have been technically preparing since the fall of 2020 when he arrived at Laurentian, and it has literally been a roller coaster ride with lockdowns, uncertainties and injuries, but Marvin's determination and willingness to grow took him to his excellent placing at U SPORTS."

This concludes the competitive season for the varsity indoor track and field team.
