Voyageurs Weekend Preview - November 11-12

Voyageurs Weekend Preview - November 11-12

This weekend is an exciting one for the Laurentian Voyageurs. Not only does the red-hot women’s hockey team play, but Voyageurs basketball returns to campus for the 2016/2017 season.

The women’s basketball team begins the action on Friday night at 6pm when they host the Western Mustangs. The Mustangs are coming off a strong season last year, having finished second in the west division standings with 28 points and 14 wins. The Voyageurs, who finished 3-16 last season, will be looking to build off of a less than stellar 2015-16 season and get the first win on Friday night. The Voyageurs had a solid tune-up in pre-season and will be looking to keep up their strong play on both sides of the court as they enter OUA regular season action.

The men’s basketball team also hosts the Mustangs immediately following the women’s game. In an almost identical situation, the Mustangs men’s basketball team finished second in the west division with 22 points and 11 wins. The Voyageurs, who finished 6-13 last season, are excited to open up OUA regular season action at home on their quest to go deeper into the playoff hunt in 2016-17.

The women’s hockey team are hitting the ice Saturday for an exciting battle of Northern Ontario. The first place Nipissing Lakers travel to Sudbury to play the Voyageurs, who are just four points back of the Lakers in third place. The Voyageurs will be led, as they have been all season, by captain Ellery Veerman and goalie Laura Deller. Puck drop for this game is set for 3:50pm at Countryside Arena.

The basketball action continues Saturday night, as both teams host the Windsor Lancers at Ben Avery Gym. Beginning with the women at 6pm, the Lancers, currently ranked #6 in the country, finished in first place in the west division last season with 30 points and 15 wins, will surely be a tough opponent for the Voyageurs.
Immediatley following the women’s game, the men will be looking for some redemption as they take on the Lancers men's squad, who upended the Voyageurs in the first-round of playoffs last year. The Lancers finished first in the west division last season with 28 points and 14 wins. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will have a challenging but exciting opening weekend at the Ben Avery.

Come on out to both the Ben Avery Gymnasium and Countryside Arena to support your Voyageurs men’s and women’s basketball teams and the women’s hockey team this weekend.
