The women's basketball team began their home opening weekend when they hosted the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night.  After racing out to a big lead in the first half, the Voyageurs' shooting went cold in the second half and the Gee-Gees were able to escape the Ben Avery Gym with a 49-45 win.

The game started strong for the Voyageurs as they held the Gee-Gees to just 11 points in each of the first two quarters on identical 4-14 shooting in each period.  That strong defence translated to great offensive possessions as the Voyageurs countered with 35 points of their own in the first half, shooting a combined 11-23 in the half.

In the third quarter, the Voyageurs clamped down defensively even more, holding the Gee-Gees to just nine points in the quarter.  However, the offence all but disappeared for the blue and gold as they managed to respond with just five points, going almost six minutes in between baskets.  Despite those woes, the women still held a nine-point advantage heading into the final frame.

Unfortunately, the ice-cold offence continued as the Voyageurs shot just 1-10 with Héléna Lamoureux's five of her team-high 13 points accounting for the entirety of their production. The Gee-Gees, meanwhile, found their footing and grabbed their first lead of the game with just over 90 seconds left as they scored 18 in the quarter to steal the win away from the Voyageurs.

The Voyageurs will look to rebound tomorrow night when they host the Carleton Ravens to close out their weekend. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm in the Ben Avery Gym.
